A Greener Future – A Local Supplier Dedicated to Reducing a School’s Carbon Footprint

GLS, educational resource supplier to schools and nurseries in the South of England has launched a new campaign to make teachers aware of their purchasing habits/a>. The “Switch to Green” campaign will not only help schools become more environmentally responsible but help to stretch their budgets further.

School Head’s, Business Managers and Bursars are becoming much savvier when it comes to running an energy efficient school. With the Carbon Reduction Commitment affecting all educational establishments from April 2010, GLS aim to provide some extra advice which will help schools even further.

Greener Procuring – Useful Tips:
- Order online: Ordering through websites, instantly reduces the amount of paper work. It’s an easy way to make a difference.
- Avoid placing small orders: To make life easier order in large quantities, use suppliers which boast cost savings when ordering in bulk. Always consider the impact of making lots of small orders on the environment.
- Choose recycled: recycled doesn’t always mean more expensive, check out suppliers who can offer cost efficient recycled resources
- Choose green: Check out the environmental credentials of a supplier.

The French government are reacting to environmental concerns and have passed some substantial environmental laws, one of them stating that From 1 January 2013, school books must be printed on recyclable paper or on paper coming from sustainable managed forests.  We would hope the UK would follow suit. With this withstanding GLS endeavour to source environmentally friendly papers that utilise as high a proportion of recycled fibre as possible without losing any quality or whiteness from the paper. All papers in their exercise books come from sustainable managed forests. The manila covers are made with 100% recycled fibre, the majority of which is post-consumer waste, and the printing inks used are solvent-free.

GLS Educational Supplies is actively committed to conserving the quality of the environment for their customers, employees and local communities. They have been recognised for their endeavours and awarded a worldwide environmental management accreditation. This demonstrates to their customers their commitment and continual work towards conserving the environment. Following on from the battle of the supermarkets and their media campaigns showcasing the price differences between shopping baskets. GLS have taken this idea on board to convey the differences in prices on key stationery items in a non-eco basket compared to an eco a basket, a staggering £20.37 cheaper if you switch to the greener items.

What’s more, GLS regularly encourage their customers to ‘switch and save the environment’. Their green Classmate range offers an economical and ecological alternative to well known brand names. They demonstrate to their customers that helping the environment does not have to be costly and with their eco ranges they can save money as well as save the environment.
